Wickedly Sustainable

Candle_2 The flame flickers, wax drips and a bouquet of aromas wafts through the air. It's no surprise that seven out of ten American households regularly burn candles. Unfortunately, the paraffin wax that makes up a large part of the candle population is a bit deceptive in its allure. In fact, paraffin is derived from the waste generated when petroleum is processed into various fuels and contains harmful toxins and carcinogens. That black soot that rises and accumulates is similar in composition to diesel soot; ouch. If you want to set the mood right, switch to the 100% plant-based, clean-burning, and American-made alternative found in soy. One California-based company, Something Wicked, eschews not only parrafin wax, but the conventional use of cotton wicks filled with paper or synthetic fibers in favor of an organic hemp one. It also comes in a post consumer recycled drinking glass; once the candle has burned, just pop it in the dishwasher and knock back your favorite beverage. Otherwise, they encourage you to send it back for reuse. Something Wicked offers eleven amazing scents like Coconut Lime and Blackberry Basil Nectarine. However, you should know that while they do use high-quality essential oils, in order to achieve these scents, they also add some synthetic fragrance. We at ecofabulous love them despite the slight imperfection because they are wicked.

It's worth noting that soy is on of the top eight food allergens. It has been put into *everything* from food to candles to fuel. Burning a soy candle around someone who is highly allergic is as bad as roasting peanuts in the room with someone who is allergic to nuts.
